Johnny Huston’s Grille and Bar is named after Ken Walter’s grandfather Johnny Huston Walters. In the age of fireside chats with FDR, the sound of big bands and the great depression, all would help shape the business savvy of our namesake. Born in Mississippi, Johnny Huston Walters began his career as a barber, cutting hair for just $7 - $12 a week, sometimes working 10-hour days. Eventually, he saved enough money to buy a pinball machine. Once that machine paid for itself, he bought his second, third and more, back then one play was 5 cents. Eventually JHW opened and operated his own coin machine business, over time he added juke boxes to his lineup. JHW employed his son Marshall, as a service repairman. Bub, as he was affectionately called, was sent all over the country – from Birmingham Alabama to Grand Rapids Mich. to learn how to repair the complex Wurlitzer Jukebox. Bub later became known as one of the top servicemen in the area, helping their business grow and succeed. Johnny Huston Walters had an entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to expand on his coin machine business by operating a pool hall, two barber shops, a restaurant and taxi line. JHW got an itch, sold all of his businesses, took a chance and moved to Fort Walton Beach Florida. He bought some land, built a mobile home park, Playground Mobile Home Park, which is still in existence today, Bub remained in Alabama. Armed with his father’s love of self-employment, Bub bought out half of a television sales and service shop to carve out his own future. Over time Johnny Huston Walters become ill, passed away and Bub moved his family to the Panhandle to operate and eventually expand on what his father started, Bub built an RV park (in Navarre). Then the summer sun hit and Bub sought out retirement. Bub's son, Ken Walters, took over the family business. In an effort to expand the family business, commemorate his grandfather’s legacy and embark on his own path of self-employment, Ken opened Johnny Huston’s Grille and Bar in Navarre Florida. Ken along with friend Steve Mobley, a New Orleans native and 24 year veteran of the food business, converted an old garage into an original and unique family sports restaurant, complete with occasional live entertainment, large flat panel TV's everywhere you look and a covered outdoor deck. Guests are invited to check out the photos of the man who inspired it all, Johnny Huston Walters, which adorn our walls. Steve has created an exciting fresh menu that is always changing.
With favorites such as Johnny’s famous fish tacos, Navarre’s best fresh 1/2 pound burger, fresh salads and grilled oysters, Philly steak sandwiches, pizza, roast beef po-boys and hand breaded seafood (New Orleans Style) spiced just right. There is a dish on the menu to appease any appetite – even your children.
